5 Free Bible Study Apps

Having easy access to technology and data can be a pain when you’re at the dinner table and no one is paying attention to anything other than their phone. But that same easy access can be very beneficial if used appropriately. Did you know that there are literally hundreds of free apps that you can download on your favorite mobile device to read just about any version of the Bible? Finding the right one for you can be challenging, though. So I have reached out to friends who regularly use apps to get some honest feedback. Below are the top 5 apps for Bible study/reading that they shared with me.

  • YouVersion Bible: “YouVersion is a simple, ad-free Bible that brings God’s Word into your daily life.
    • This one was a big hit with most of my friends! After numerous recommendations, I gave it a try and loved it.
    • Download your favorite Bible version for offline use (save your data!).
    • There are 50 English versions and audio Bibles.
    • Pick from several reading plans to guide you.
    • Enjoy a verse of the day which includes a graphic that can easily be shared on your social sites.
  • Bible Gateway: “Bible Gateway is a tool for reading and researching Scripture, and now it’s on  your device!”
    • I’ve used Bible Gateway on my desktop/laptop for years so I was very excited to discover they have an app.
    • Easily search for a topic by typing in a verse or keyword.
    • Select a reading plan and get daily reminders for each day’s reading.
    • 41 English versions available with commentaries, dictionaries, and audio Bibles.
    • They also have a verse of the day that can be shared on social sites.
  • Glo Bible: “Glo Bible connects resources with the Scripture you are currently reading.”
    • Each verse is linked to videos, pictures, sermons, commentaries, maps, and more. It’s just a tap away.
    • Create your own reading plan and set your own pace.
    • English Standard Version is the default, however, you can download other versions. Some are free and some have a small fee.
    • Customize your Bible by changing the background color, font type, and size, and turn on or off Red Lettering.
    • Reading plans and audio Bibles are available.
  • Bible by Olive Tree: “Do more than just read your Bible.”
    • One big advantage of this app is it’s all stored on your device which means you are not using up your data.
    • Search through your entire library of Bibles, commentaries, and dictionaries using their one-of-a-kind “Resource Guide.”
    • View different versions side-by-side.
    • All of your data syncs between all of your devices (PC, Mac, Phone, Tablet).
    • Download reading plans and share scripture with your friends.
  • Blue Letter Bible: “Dig deep into God’s Word.”
    • Study the Hebrew & Greek with their original language lexicon.
    • Over 15 Bibles available.
